Tock was founded by restaurateur Nick Kokonas (co-founder of Alinea, one of the US's most celebrated fine dining restaurants) in 2014. Its founding thesis was radical for its time: charge guests in full at booking, like a concert ticket. This eliminates no-shows entirely and gives restaurants cash flow visibility weeks in advance.
That model worked brilliantly for the tasting menu fine dining segment — restaurants where a $250/head experience justifies the prepayment ask. But Tock was acquired by Squarespace in 2021, and has since expanded its positioning to "any restaurant." The question is whether that expansion actually serves independent restaurants, or whether it's square peg in round hole.
Tock Pricing (2025)
- Core ($199/month): Basic reservation management, table management, standard reporting
- Pro ($399/month): Prepaid experiences, full CRM, marketing tools, advanced analytics
- Enterprise ($699+/month): Multi-location, API access, dedicated account manager
- Commission: 2% on all prepaid/experience bookings across all plans
- Contract: Annual required; monthly option at higher rates
Where Tock Genuinely Wins
For the right type of restaurant, Tock's model is compelling:
- Prepaid eliminates no-shows: If guests have paid $200 in advance for a tasting menu, the no-show rate drops to near-zero. The 19% no-show problem simply doesn't exist for Tock's ideal customer
- Cash flow visibility: Knowing two weeks in advance how many covers are coming (and that they're paid) fundamentally changes operations planning — staffing, food ordering, waste reduction
- Experience packaging: Tock's tools for creating and selling multi-course experiences, wine pairings, and private dining packages are the best in class
- Discovery network: Tock's consumer marketplace has a loyal high-value diner audience — guests specifically seeking premium dining experiences
Where Tock Falls Short
The prepaid model is a hard sell for most independent restaurants. The reality:
- Guest resistance to prepayment: For casual to mid-range restaurants, asking guests to prepay $50–$100 per head increases booking friction significantly. Many guests will simply choose a competitor who doesn't require prepayment
- Not every restaurant is an experience: Tock's UI and workflows are optimised for tasting menus and event-style dining. A neighbourhood Italian or bistro doesn't need a ticketing system — it needs a simple, fast booking widget
- Expensive for what you get at lower tiers: At $199/month, you're getting reservation software with no prepayment tools. The features that justify Tock's existence are Pro-tier ($399/month) and above
- No AI phone answering: Like every other platform reviewed here, Tock has no solution for the missed call problem
- 2% commission compounds: For a restaurant doing $500k in prepaid bookings annually, that's $10,000 in Tock commissions — on top of the monthly fee
"Tock is exceptional software for the restaurant it was designed for: the 200-cover Michelin-starred tasting menu venue. For the independent neighbourhood restaurant, you're paying for tools you'll never use."

The Verdict
Tock is the right tool for fine dining tasting menu restaurants. For everyone else, it's overengineered and overpriced. If your goal is reducing no-shows without the prepayment model, deposits (available in most modern platforms) achieve a 57% no-show reduction with far less guest friction.
